Human rights: Iranian human rights lawyer released from prison

She is considered an influential lawyer in Iran. She has been stuck in the notorious Ewin Prison for weeks. According to activists, the 60-year-old will apparently be released shortly before a new court date.

Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been released from the notorious Ewin Prison. The US non-governmental organization Center for Human Rights in Iran announced this on Wednesday evening on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). As Sotoudeh’s husband Resa Chandan wrote on X, she was released on bail on Wednesday and before a court date. Chandan and the NGO also released a photo showing Sotoudeh with three men and not wearing a headscarf.

Sotoudeh was arrested in late October at the funeral of Iranian Armita Garawand, who fell into a coma and died last month after an alleged confrontation with the notorious morality police. As the Fars news agency reported, Sotoudeh is accused of violating the headscarf requirement at the funeral.

The 60-year-old Sotoudeh is considered one of the most influential lawyers in Iran. In 2020 she received the Alternative Nobel Prize. Sotoudeh has been imprisoned several times in recent years and has been behind bars for many years.
