Israel attacked the city of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip. Doctors Without Borders reports dozens of deaths and injuries with severe burns. The organization calls for an immediate ceasefire.
According to Doctors Without Borders, at least 70 people have been killed in a hospital in the city following an Israeli airstrike in the city of Khan Yunis. Dozens of patients, including many children and young people, had to be treated for severe burns at Nasser Hospital on Sunday, the aid organization said, citing its staff at the clinic.
On Sunday afternoon, statistics were already posted in the clinic that 47 people had been killed. A photographer reported to the German Press Agency at the time that there were many body bags lined up in the clinic. The Israeli army did not initially release a statement on reports of attacks in the south of the Gaza Strip.
“A ceasefire is a must”
Doctors Without Borders’ project manager in southern Gaza, Christophe Garnier, said: “The medical need is enormous.” The group is ready to expand its operations, but needs “basic security guarantees and unrestricted access to medical and humanitarian supplies,” he said. “A ceasefire is a must, now more than ever, to stop the ongoing bloodshed,” he demanded.
Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant announced on Saturday that the attacks in the Gaza Strip would soon be expanded to the south. The military has been calling on northern residents for more than a month to flee to a southern zone west of Khan Yunis on the Mediterranean. Most recently, residents of Khan Yunis were also called upon to flee for the first time.
Hamas authorities: Twelve dead in clinic shelling in northern Gaza
According to the Islamist Hamas Ministry of Health, twelve people were killed in a shelling of a clinic in the northern Gaza Strip. The authority’s spokesman, Ashraf al-Kudra, said the victims included several patients and their companions. Dozens more were injured. The ministry blamed Israel for the attack on the Indonesian hospital in the northern coastal area. The Israeli military did not initially comment when asked. Al-Kudra’s information could not initially be independently verified.
Eyewitnesses reported Israeli tanks stationed not far from the hospital. According to Al-Kudra, there are still 200 employees in the clinic as well as thousands of displaced people. He did not give an exact number. “We asked the World Health Organization to evacuate the patients,” Al-Kudra said.
