From February to September, the number of unauthorized entries into Germany rose steadily. The federal police have new figures for October that point in a different direction.
The number of refugees entering Germany without permission will be significantly higher this year than in previous years – but the upward trend was stopped in October.
The Federal Police detected 112,178 unauthorized entries from January to October, said the Federal Police Headquarters in Potsdam. Last year it registered almost 92,000 refugees who entered the country illegally. According to the federal government, the number was last higher in the year of the so-called refugee crisis in 2015, at around 217,000.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced stationary border controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland on October 16th, initially for ten days and then extended them several times.
From February onwards, the number of refugees entering the country without permission rose continuously and then made a big jump, especially from September to October. According to their own information, the Federal Police counted 14,701 unauthorized entries in August, 21,366 in September and 20,059 in October.
From the beginning of January to the end of October, around 267,000 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time – around 67 percent more than in the same period last year.
