Middle East: Journalists killed on Israel-Lebanese border

There are repeated confrontations on the border between Lebanon and Israel. At least two journalists from a pro-Iranian broadcaster have apparently been killed in an Israeli attack.

According to local media, at least two journalists have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. The pro-Iranian television channel Al-Majadin confirmed that a reporter and a photographer from the channel were killed. The crew was “directly and specifically attacked,” said the station’s director.

A security source also told the German Press Agency that a civilian was also killed in the attack. The Israeli army said it was investigating the reports.

Israel has blocked the Lebanon-based Al-Majadin television channel since mid-November. Israel accuses the station of “propaganda” and alleged proximity to the Hezbollah militia. It has been shown that its reporters and programs are “carrying out propaganda against us,” the Israeli Ministry of Communications said on X, formerly Twitter.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war after the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7th, there have been repeated confrontations between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on the border between Israel and Lebanon. There have already been fatalities on both sides. It is the worst escalation since the second Lebanon war in 2006.

According to Lebanese security sources, an 80-year-old woman was killed and her granddaughter was injured in previous Israeli counterattacks in Lebanon. The Israeli army had previously said that “terrorists” had fired mortar shells at a military post in northern Israel. The launch site was then attacked.
