The group of Brics states are calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war between the Islamist Hamas and Israel. At a virtual summit, the group of Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa called for an “immediate, permanent and sustained humanitarian ceasefire leading to a cessation of hostilities.”
At the start of the summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa accused Israel of war crimes and “genocide” in the Gaza Strip. “Israel’s collective punishment of Palestinian civilians through the unlawful use of force is a war crime,” Ramaphosa said. The “deliberate denial” of medicine, fuel, food and water to the residents of the Palestinian territory amounts to “genocide.”
