Israel has agreed to exchange 50 hostages for 300 imprisoned Palestinians as part of the deal with Hamas. The government has now published a list of people who are being released into freedom – most of them are minors.
300 Palestinian prisoners for 50 Israeli hostages – that is the deal agreed upon by the Israeli government and the Hamas leadership. The Israeli government has published a list of those targeted for release from prison. According to Israeli media, this will give citizens the opportunity to raise objections to the release of individuals.
The list contains 300 names with their gender, date of birth, place of residence, date of arrest and what they are accused of.
Of the 300 people currently still incarcerated, most are male teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18. Five detainees are 14 years old, six are 15 years old, 37 are 16 years old and 76 17-year-olds are also scheduled for release. At 146, 18-year-olds make up the largest group on the release list. However, only 30 of the prisoners are of legal age.
Israel wants to release 33 imprisoned women
Only 33 women are on the list: the youngest is 15 years old, the oldest is 59 – but most are in their twenties. According to the list, Sharuk Salah Ibrahim Deviat, for example, was arrested on October 11, 2015 – when she was 18. She was sentenced to 16 years in prison for attempted murder with a knife. She is now 25 and could soon see her family again.
Middle East conflict
Germany “stands firmly on Israel’s side.” What about the rest of the world?
However, the majority of those who could soon be released were only arrested this year and have not yet been convicted. The allegations are “Violation of public order”, “intentional or negligent damage to property”, “Handing over stones”, “Stone throwing”, “support of terrorism”, “Shooting people” up to and including “Throwing a bomb or incendiary device”. Israeli media had previously reported that no prisoners serving time for murder would be released.
Palestinian prisoners against Israeli hostages
The oldest prisoner who is now set for freedom is the 59-year-old Hanan Saleh Abdullah Barghouti. She has been in an Israeli prison since September 4, 2023 because she is accused of an offense against state security. The list does not give any details about the crime. But apparently her alleged offense wasn’t so serious that Israel could not let it rest with twelve weeks in prison – at least if kidnapped Israelis were released in return.
