New elections: According to the survey, almost half of Germans are in favor

Survey clap for the traffic lights: According to a recent survey, almost half of the people in Germany want a new election for the Bundestag. In addition, a majority believes that the top staff in the government coalition are overwhelmed.

Against the backdrop of the Federal Republic’s worsening budget crisis, almost half of the people in Germany want a new election for the Bundestag. This is what 46 percent of those surveyed said in a representative survey by the opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Deutschland. 48 percent are against new elections to the Bundestag.

Majority in East Germany for new Bundestag elections

What is striking is that the supporters of the traffic light parties overwhelmingly reject early voting, while a majority of potential CDU/CSU and AfD voters are of the opinion that there should be new elections. There are also differences between West and East Germany.

Around two thirds of all respondents are also of the opinion that Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) are not up to their duties in office.

A large majority (69 percent) also believe that the federal government is overwhelmed by the budget crisis. Only 26 percent believe that the coalition can overcome the challenges presented by the Federal Constitutional Court’s decision last week.

Due to the judge’s ruling from Karlsruhe, the federal government will be missing at least 60 billion euros over the next four years. If savings were necessary, 55 percent of those surveyed would cut spending on development aid. However, this item only accounts for around 11.5 billion euros in the current federal budget and therefore only around 2.5 percent. Almost two thirds would cut social spending – at around 172 billion euros, the largest single budget in the federal budget – as well as expenses for the Bundeswehr and climate protection.

For the representative survey Forsa surveyed a total of 1,010 eligible voters on November 22, 2022. The statistical margin of error is +/- three percentage points. 100 percent missing information = “don’t know”. The star is part of RTL Deutschland.
