National Socialism: Former concentration camp secretary in court – aiding and abetting murder

The National Socialists murdered tens of thousands in the Stutthof concentration camp. Since the end of the war there have been a number of trials against members of the SS. Now a civil employee is supposed to come to court.

A former secretary in the German Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig has to answer in court. The Itzehoe district court opened the main proceedings against the 96-year-old on Friday, a spokeswoman for the court said.

The accused are charged with complicity in more than 11,000 cases of murder. The trial is scheduled to begin on September 30th. The proceedings will take place before a youth chamber because the accused was still an adolescent at the age of 18 or 19 at the time of the offense.

“The accused is charged with helping those responsible for the systematic killing of those imprisoned there between June 1943 and April 1945 in her function as a typist and typist in the camp commandant’s office of the former Stutthof concentration camp,” the statement said of the court in the city in Schleswig-Holstein.

The 3rd Great Youth Chamber considers the defendant to be sufficiently suspicious of having acted aiding and abetting 11,387 cases of murder, seven of which are said to have remained an attempt. The court spokeswoman pointed out that every defendant is considered innocent until a possible final conviction.

According to a report by the ARD “Tagesschau” from last year, the woman had already been questioned several times as a witness. In 1954 she testified that all correspondence with the SS Economic Administration Main Office ran over her desk. Commander Paul Werner Hoppe dictated her daily letters and ordered radio messages. She said at the time that she knew nothing about the killing machinery that killed tens of thousands of people in the immediate vicinity while she was on duty.
