Increased use of the death penalty? Iran is said to have executed 700 people this year – a worrying trend.
According to activists, 700 death sentences have already been carried out in Iran this year. The Norwegian-based human rights organization Hengaw wrote this on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). Hengaw did not provide a comparison value to the previous year.
According to the Iran Human Rights organization, the average in recent years has been 600 executions per year. Iran Human Rights recently reported an increase in executions in Iran based on the first ten months of the year.
Human rights activists have been criticizing the use of the death penalty in the Islamic Republic for years. There are no official figures on executions. Iran also executed eight participants in anti-system protests last year. Human rights organizations repeatedly accuse the Iranian government of using executions as an “instrument to suppress protests and ethnic minorities.”
