Budget debate: Traffic light coalition meets coalition committee

In the morning, Chancellor Olaf Scholz answered questions from the Bundestag – but the coalition also still needs to talk about the budget. According to information from RTL/ntv, traffic light representatives want to speak out at a coalition committee on Wednesday.

Representatives of the traffic light coalition want to meet on Wednesday evening to discuss the budget for the coming year as part of the coalition committee. RTL/ntv learned this from government circles.

The central topic of the deliberations is the budget for 2024, after the Federal Constitutional Court put a stop to the previous plans. The government subsequently reallocated 60 billion euros in Corona loans that were not needed in 2021 for spending on climate protection and modernization. Karlsruhe declared this reallocation unconstitutional.

Traffic light coalitions want to develop “understanding” for each other on budget issues

Now the traffic light is facing a billion-dollar budget hole, both for 2023 and 2024. A coalition committee is supposed to remedy the situation, because the three traffic light parties actually want to pass the budget this year. This requires drastic savings of up to 20 billion euros, which will be negotiated on Wednesday evening.

No concrete decisions are apparently planned, it was said. But they want to develop understanding for the perspectives of the other factions, says a coalition budget politician. Negotiations for the coming year are already “in full swing”. The initial shock of the verdict has “almost been digested,” said another member of one of the government factions.

In the Bundestag session on Tuesday, clear differences emerged – even within the traffic lights. SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich questioned the debt brake anchored in the Basic Law. “We have to ask ourselves whether it is appropriate to the challenges of this time,” he said. “We need fundamental corrections to the design of the debt brake.” The FDP, on the other hand, insists that the debt brake will not be touched.
