Angela Merkel is bid farewell to the Bundeswehr with a big tattoo. A video on Twitter shows which music is being played – many users are enthusiastic.
Today, Thursday evening, Angela Merkel will be bid farewell to the Bundeswehr with a big tattoo. The military ceremony is traditionally held at the end of the term of office of Federal Chancellors, Federal Presidents and Federal Defense Ministers. For the occasion, the honorees can ask for a few songs, which are then voiced by the staff music corps of the Bundeswehr.
A video published on Twitter gives a foretaste of what that will sound like with Angela Merkel. An officer who is apparently involved in the preparations for the great tattoo uploaded the sample on Wednesday evening. The staff music corps rehearses the instrumental version of Nina Hagens hit “You forgot the color film”.
Big tattoo for Angela Merkel: selection of music poses problems for the Bundeswehr
Merkel had wished for the GDR classic as a farewell – and thus easily got the musicians of the Bundeswehr into a mess. Hildegard Knef’s hit song, as well as Merkel’s further song request, “For me, it should rain red roses”, was not in the Bundeswehr’s music archive, said conductor and Lieutenant Colonel Reinhard Kiauka of the “Taz”. Nina Hagen’s song had to be rearranged for a symphonic wind orchestra within a few days.
As can be seen in the Twitter video and certainly later at the official ceremony, it was successful. The tweet has already been retweeted almost a thousand times – and the musical performance is also met with great approval. “Seldom have I felt as connected to Angela #Merkel as I did with this song,” wrote the former Federal Data Protection Officer Peter Schaar (Greens), for example. “This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in my life. Thank you Merkel!” Tweeted the left-wing politician Martin Delius in Berlin. Green politician Renate Künast praised Merkel for her “subtle humor”. The Bundeswehr Orchestra also received a lot of praise: some users wanted the wind version as a track on Spotify.

Farewell in a stripped-down form
Due to the corona pandemic, the ceremony for Merkel is taking place on a smaller scale than usual, a reception is not planned. The 2G-Plus rule applies. Only people who have been vaccinated or have recovered and who have also taken an up-to-date test are allowed in. Merkel has invited a good 50 federal ministers from her time in government, as well as a number of companions from various areas of society. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is expected as a guest of honor, he will be accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender. At the beginning, Merkel will give a seven-minute speech.
The outgoing Chancellor wanted the hymn “Great God, we praise you” as the third piece of music. That, in turn, shouldn’t pose any major challenges for the Bundeswehr musicians – it is, so to speak, a tattoo classic that the former Federal Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziére had played when he left.
