He had already ruled out a ministerial office before the federal election, but Kevin Kühnert is now moving to the forefront of the SPD anyway. He is to succeed Lars Klingbeil as general secretary of the party.
According to media reports, the deputy SPD chairman Kevin Kühnert will become the party’s new general secretary. An SPD top group agreed internally on this, “Spiegel” and the portal “ThePioneer” reported unanimously on Thursday.
There was initially no confirmation from the party. A spokeswoman referred to meetings of the presidium and board this Friday. According to the reports, the personnel will then be officially approved.
Kevin Kühnert is to follow Lars Klingbeil
The 32-year-old former Juso chairman Kühnert has been the party’s vice chairman since the end of 2019. The post of general secretary becomes vacant because the previous incumbent Lars Klingbeil applies for the party chairmanship. His choice is considered safe.
Klingbeil would replace the previous party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans. He will not run again while co-chair Saskia Esken applies for another term of office. The personnel decisions will be made at a party congress on December 11th. The candidates for the ministerial posts to be filled by the SPD in the future federal government are to be announced this weekend. The election of Olaf Scholz as Federal Chancellor is scheduled for next Wednesday.
