Politician salaries will rise 1.6 percent next year

Politicians’ salaries will rise by 1.6 percent in the coming year. The Court of Auditors published this statutory increase yesterday, Thursday. Unless the National Council decides otherwise, the increase comes into force on January 1st.

The starting point of the “reference pyramid” is the income of the members of the National Council. Next year you will receive € 9,376 gross monthly – € 148 more than this year. On the basis of their salaries, the system, which was fixed after several salary scandals in 1997, also calculates the salaries of other politicians.

At the top is Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen with 25,357 euros (plus 400), ahead of the Chancellor, who is currently still called Alexander Schallenberg (VP), with 22,640 euros (plus 357) and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Green) with 19,923 euros (plus 314). The state governors receive a maximum of 18,751 euros (plus 295), whereby the law only specifies upper limits for state politicians, which can also be fallen below.

Originally, provincial governors and ministers were entitled to the same income. Since a staggered increase for 2019, the ministers are getting out a little worse: Next year they will receive 18,112 euros (plus 285). Members of the National Council Club are entitled to 15,395 euros (plus 242), National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (VP) receives 19,018 euros (plus 299).

Provincial councils receive 16,876 euros, state parliament presidents 14,063 euros, state parliament members 7501 euros. Federal Council mandates receive exactly half as much as their colleagues in the National Council: 4688 euros.

The Court of Auditors has no leeway in determining this. It results from the adjustment factor stipulated by law. This corresponds to either the inflation rate in the period from July of the previous year to June of the current year or the ASVG pension increase set for the following year. The lower value is used. For 2022, both values were the same at 1.6 percent.

In the previous year, politicians decided on a zero-wage round for some functions.
