In Bavaria people are still discussing gender. Prime Minister Markus Söder now wants to take action and ban the language regulation in his state.
Gendering will be banned in Bavaria’s schools and authorities in the future. “For Bavaria I can say: with us there will be no mandatory gender. On the contrary: we will even ban gender in schools and administration”said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Tuesday in his first government statement in the new legislative period in the state parliament.
At the same time, Söder accused the federal traffic light government of going overboard with projects such as cannabis legalization, gender and the right to self-determination. “Don’t we have any other problems in Germany?”asked he.
Söder had previously named criteria for the Union’s next candidate for chancellor. “The key question in the candidate for chancellor is: Who can concentrate the Union’s votes the most? Then the CDU has to decide”said the Bavarian Prime Minister star.

“We are not here for a summer job. It’s about making Germany fit”said Söder. “It’s like a penalty shootout: who can you trust to take the last penalty? This is the stuff that politicians have to be made of – regardless of whether they are prime minister or want to become chancellor.” In the event of an early election, CDU leader Friedrich Merz would be “definitely the favorite”, explained Söder. He denied his own interest in running for chancellor. “A CSU chairman only has the option of becoming a candidate for chancellor once in his life.” Söder described the collaboration with Merz as: “really good”.

The next federal election will take place regularly in autumn 2025. In 2021, Söder left the Union’s candidacy for chancellor to the then party leader Armin Laschet after a bitter power struggle. Among the Christian Democrats, North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst has not yet expressed any open ambitions to run for chancellor, but he has not denied them either. In August, Söder advocated that the Union’s candidate for chancellor should not be chosen until after the Eastern elections in 2024. In September, new state parliaments will be elected in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg.
