Refugees: 188 Afghans fly to Germany with a confirmation of admission

After the Taliban came to power, many Afghans fled to Pakistan. While they are now to be deported there en masse, Germany wants to take in a few hundred.

188 Afghans flew out of Pakistan with a confirmation of admission to Germany. The German Press Agency learned this from circles at the German embassy in the capital Islamabad. This is the first charter flight from Pakistan with a large number of Afghans to be taken in in ten months. The group is made up of people from admission procedures for particularly vulnerable groups from Afghanistan, such as the federal admission program or the local staff procedure, the Foreign Office said. The plane is scheduled to land in Leipzig in the evening.

The federal government recently announced that it wanted to protect Afghan refugees from the mass deportations currently taking place from Pakistan by agreeing to accept them in Germany. The government in Islamabad announced at the beginning of October that it would deport refugees without residence status. According to government figures, around 4.4 million Afghan refugees lived in the country, 1.7 million of them without valid papers

Reception program for people at risk

According to the federal government, around 11,500 people from Afghanistan who have been accepted by the Federal Republic of Germany were waiting to leave for Germany at the end of November. At the time, around 3,000 of them were in Pakistan, 300 in Iran and more than 8,000 in Afghanistan. 573 affected Afghans have actually arrived since the end of June.

Of those eligible to enter the country, 572 had a confirmation of admission as part of the federal admission program. Afghans who are particularly at risk can come to Germany through the federal admission program. It is aimed at people who are particularly exposed through their commitment to women and human rights or through their work in the areas of justice, politics, media, education, culture, sport or science. The program was intended to accommodate 1,000 Afghans per month.
