“Please do not agree to this bill,” says a publicly released letter to members of the Bundestag. It is about setting a course that will have serious social consequences, especially for the development and life prospects of young people. The “Welt” first reported about it.
The appeal initiated by the German Medical Association has also been signed by other medical and scientific associations, the German Teachers’ Association and the police union, among others.
Medical President Legalization leads to more consumption
Medical President Klaus Reinhardt said the international study situation was clear: “The legalization of cannabis leads to more consumption and trivializes the associated risks. Cannabis can be addictive and cause serious developmental damage. This country does not need cannabis legalization.” Instead, what is needed is a drug policy that focuses decisively on more prevention and help offers, especially for young people.
The traffic light coalition factions recently agreed on the details of a draft law. Home cultivation and possession of certain amounts of the drug should therefore be permitted for adults from April 1, 2024. Clubs for collective cultivation should be possible on July 1st. Cannabis should be removed from the list of banned substances in the Narcotics Act. Various rules and specifications are planned for controlled release. According to the SPD, the law should be passed in the Bundestag “soon in the new year”.
