Boris Pistorius: “If you want peace, you have to be prepared for war”

In the star-Interview Boris Pistorius talks about his first year as defense minister, a wrong culture of mistakes and the right football technique.

Mister Pistorius, we want to talk to you about a year that you don’t often experience. They are from the State in Federal politics has risen, into a serious crisis, into a particularly difficult ministry. Now, in addition to the war in Ukraine, you also have to respond to the war in Israel. What prevails: the pressure of the task or the fascination of being there?
For me the task is an honor. And I feel the great responsibility.

When, for example?
Let’s take the situation in Sudan in April. That was dangerous. The security situation deteriorated within a few days and violence escalated. Suddenly the country was in civil war – and hundreds of Germans were in the middle of it. We decided back then that the Bundeswehr would get the German citizens out. At the same time I had planned a trip to the USA.

Then you canceled it.
Yes immediately. I wanted to be in Germany when my soldiers carried out this difficult military operation. The situation at the airport near Khartoum was unmanageable, and fighting continued not far away. In the end, we got around 800 people out of Sudan and brought them to safety. I’m proud of the team.

Does it bother you to know: My decisions can affect life and… Death decide?
Yes, of couse. What concerns me in situations like this is that there could be an accident or a shootout. It is important to be constantly informed about the situation so that you can react immediately if necessary.

You have been through many extreme situations this year. Are you still sleeping well?
Yes. Sometimes too little, but good.

Your cell phone always within earshot?
Yes, sure. This is always on. There’s no other way.

Have you ever regretted it, Chancellor Olaf Scholz to have agreed immediately when he offered you the position?
No, not for a second.

According to surveys, you have been the most popular cabinet minister for months. Do you have an explanation for this?
