Van der Bellen warns ÖVP: “need prudent government”

VIENNA. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen commented on the turbulence in the ÖVP on Friday evening.

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen again addressed the population in a TV address on the occasion of the government reshuffle. This time he started his speech with insult and referred to numerous satires and caricatures on social media. He was amused by these contributions. “It’s kind of nice that, despite everything, we don’t run out of humiliation,” he said, but then immediately got serious and warned the ÖVP to restore lost trust.

It’s not about party logic

As the party with the strongest vote, the People’s Party could of course decide for itself who it would like to nominate and propose for ministerial posts. “But it also has to be aware that it is about filling the highest state offices, and not about party logic. One of my tasks is to look at it and make sure that the issues that are for us are not forgotten everyone is important for our entire country. That we do not only look at spheres of power and influence, but also to the people in our country and their great and justified expectations. I will pay attention to that. For this we need a strong, capable, prudent government “, said Van der Bellen warning words to the ÖVP.

“Regain trust”

“Trust is the most important capital in politics,” he quoted from the farewell speech given by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “I couldn’t put it better. The point now is to regain lost trust. Through hard, serious work for the benefit of all: through fact-based decisions. Through comprehensible communication. Through cooperation, through stability and through transparency.”

Furthermore, it is a matter of filling the important offices in our state with suitable, trustworthy personalities. The basic requirement to lead such an office is respect for the function. The humility to serve our country. And the will to really want that too. The person must of course also be professionally competent. And she must be of the highest degree of integrity. “I will speak to the nominated members of the government about these matters. With all due care and accuracy.”

“Austria now needs clarity. Austria needs a common approach. Austria needs quick, consistent, constitutional action and clear decisions.” There is enough to do: “We are still in the midst of the pandemic with massive health, economic, interpersonal and social effects. We are in the middle of a serious climate crisis that threatens our future, our prosperity, our community. That’s just two of the burning issues to which an Austrian federal government must devote its full attention. They will not tolerate any delay, “said the Federal President.
