Opposition is pushing for new elections soon

VIENNA. For FP boss Kickl the government is “ready to resign”, SPÖ vice club boss Leichtfried does not believe in a new election.

After the recent events, there is “no way around” new elections: This is how FP boss Herbert Kickl commented yesterday on the turquoise personnel damage.

In his view, the government as a whole must resign, and the 2019 election results no longer reflect the current mood in the population in any way. The “ÖVP corruption system” that has meanwhile been exposed and the “scandalous behavior of the ÖVP in corona politics” are reason enough for immediate new elections, said the FP boss and announced a blue new election motion in parliament.

Yesterday, the SP vice-club boss Jörg Leichtfried put it somewhat more diplomatically: “If this government can no longer work together and a ruling party ends the coalition, the SPÖ is in any case ready for new elections,” he said.

However, he also considers this scenario to be “unlikely,” said Leichtfried. Both the ÖVP and the Greens would do a lot to stay in government.

Neos boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger also considers new elections to be necessary, but due to the pandemic situation, these should not be called immediately, but after the corona crisis has been overcome next year.

A “government capable of acting” is said to be easier to achieve through new elections. The fact that the ÖVP treats the highest offices as “party political deferring” hurts its “heart,” said Meinl-Reisinger.

FP security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer criticized above all the new Interior Minister Gerhard Karner as a representative of “deep black networks”, the Lower Austrian ÖVP probably wanted to “secure their power center in the Interior Ministry” with the former spokesman for ex-Interior Minister Ernst Strasser, he railed.
