Migrants repeatedly cross the English Channel in small inflatable boats. Now a boat is in distress and a person is dying. But there could be more victims.
One person has died while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to Great Britain. As the French maritime prefecture announced, rescue workers were unable to resuscitate the unconscious person.
Another person was seriously injured and taken to hospital in the northern French city of Calais. 64 migrants in distress on board the shipwrecked boat were rescued.
According to the maritime prefecture, the boat was in distress during the night off the coast of Grand-Fort-Philippe between Calais and Dunkerque. Air escaped from part of the boat and people were in the water. The search for other shipwrecked people is ongoing.
Dangerous crossing
British Secretary of State Andrew Griffith told Sky News television: “It shows once again how important it is to take action against the terrible business of human traffickers in the English Channel.”
Migrants repeatedly cross the English Channel in small inflatable boats. The crossing is dangerous, especially because the inlet is used by many large ships. People keep losing their lives.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made it his goal to stop the small boats. People should be deterred from crossing. An agreement with Rwanda should also help: Great Britain wants to send people who come to the country irregularly to Rwanda – regardless of their actual origin. So far the project has failed in the courts.
