Migration: Pope Francis in migrant camp on Lesbos

Pope Francis has arrived on Lesbos – a focal point of the problems of European refugee and migration policy. When he arrives at the refugee camp, he surprises those present.

Pope Francis has arrived on a visit to a migrant camp on the Greek Mediterranean island of Lesbos. The pontiff drove up to the Kara Tepe camp, then, contrary to the protocol, immediately got out of the car and walked past hundreds of migrants.

He shook hands with many, chatted and put his hand on children’s heads. Afterwards, a prayer with refugees was planned in a specially erected tent.

Criticism of migration policy

Francis returns to the island more than five years after a previous visit. In 2016 he came to what was then the Moria camp, which burned down in autumn 2020. A temporary camp has now been set up. The head of the Catholic Church had already criticized the excesses of the migration policy on the first stop of his trip to Cyprus and called for a rethink.
