Crime: Suspicion of terrorism in Vienna: Three people in custody

Danger of escape, cover-up and commission of crimes: The authorities in Austria are taking tough action against a suspected terrorist cell – three are now in custody.

In connection with the investigation against an Islamist network in Austria, the authorities have ordered pre-trial detention against two men and a woman.

This was decided by the regional criminal court, a court spokeswoman told the APA news agency. The regional court assumed that the reasons for detention were the risk of escape, concealment and the risk of committing a crime.

The three are being investigated for belonging to a terrorist organization in connection with terrorist crimes. During a search, data carriers such as cell phones were seized and are now being evaluated. The three had “not confessed,” said the court spokeswoman.

When the police raided a refugee accommodation shortly before Christmas, a fourth person who happened to be present was arrested. It was still being investigated whether she had anything to do with possible planned crimes by the three others.

The arrest is said to be in connection with the tightened security measures at Cologne Cathedral. According to dpa information, the German security authorities had received information about a possible attack plan by an Islamist group on the cathedral and a church in Vienna. Viennese authorities did not provide any information.
