Ukraine says it destroyed a Russian warship in an attack on Crimea. Moscow admitted “damage” to the ship.
The Ukrainian air force says it has destroyed a warship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow. The target of the attack was the port of the Crimean city of Feodosiya, which is home to an important Russian naval base. In the Telegram online service, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Tuesday that the landing ship “Novocherkassk” of the Russian Black Sea Fleet had been attacked with cruise missiles “in the Feodosiya region.”
The ship that was suspected of carrying Iranian drones that Russia uses against Ukraine was destroyed. Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk shared a video purporting to show an explosion at the Feodosiya naval base.
Russia confirms Ukraine attack
Crimea’s Russian governor Sergei Aksyonov confirmed an “enemy attack” in the region. “The port area is cordoned off,” he wrote on Telegram. There was an explosion there and a fire that had broken out was brought under control. The Russian Defense Ministry, however, spoke of “damage” to the warship.
The Novocherkassk was the target of a Ukrainian airstrike, the ministry announced in Moscow on Tuesday, according to the Russian state news agency Tass. The Russian side did not provide any further information about the damage. However, according to information from Moscow, Russian anti-aircraft defense destroyed two Ukrainian fighter jets that attacked the ship.
The ministry in Moscow said that the two Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft that were shot down belonged to the tactical aviation squadrons of the Ukrainian Air Force and fired guided missiles. Ukraine had informed about the deployment of tactical forces. However, there was no information from Kiev about the destruction of the fighter jets.
One dead, two injured
According to Russian information, one person was killed in the attack on Crimea. Two more people were injured, Governor Aksyonov said via Telegram. Six buildings were damaged in the attack and the residents were evacuated. The transport infrastructure is functioning “normally”.
Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in violation of international law, is a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks.
