In another US state, Donald Trump is barred from running for the Republican presidential nomination. Now the judiciary is likely to deal with the decision soon.
Maine has now become the second US state after Colorado to exclude former President Donald Trump from the primary election for the Republican presidential nomination. The responsible ministry in Augusta announced this on the X platform, formerly Twitter.
Trump’s campaign team immediately announced that they wanted to take action against the decision. In Maine, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who is responsible for elections, concluded that the former president’s primary election application was “invalid.” According to a constitutional amendment, Trump is “not qualified to be president.” According to Bellow’s statement, people who have incited an “insurrection” against the constitution are excluded from elections.
The Democrat concluded that she was aware that no Secretary of State had ever denied a presidential candidate voting access on that legal basis. “I am also aware that no presidential candidate has ever participated in an insurrection before.”
Various plaintiffs in various US states
Trump supporters stormed the parliament building in Washington on January 6, 2021. Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump had previously incited his supporters during a speech. As a result of the riots, five people died. Trump also faces charges of attempted election fraud for his actions surrounding the vote.
Based on these events, various plaintiffs in various US states are attempting to have Trump’s name removed from ballot papers for the 2024 presidential election. The 77-year-old wants to run again for the Republicans against Biden (81) and move into the White House.
Supreme Court probably needs to provide clarity
Expecting that Trump’s team would appeal, Bellows suspended her decision for the time being – as she did in Colorado. In that state, the Supreme Court also ruled last week that Trump was unsuitable for the office of president because of his role in the storming of the Capitol and therefore could not take part in the primary election. However, the American Center for Law and Justice appealed the decision on behalf of the Colorado Republican Party.
It can be assumed that the question of Trump’s participation in the elections will ultimately have to be clarified by the US Supreme Court.
The Colorado Supreme Court has suspended its decision until the issue is finally resolved. Trump’s name is likely to be on the ballot for his party’s primary election in the state at the beginning of next year.
Also on Thursday, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber released the list of presidential candidates for the March primary in the large and important state – with Trump as one of the Republican candidates on it.
