There are more than twice as many refugees worldwide as there were seven years ago. The UN is concerned that the debate is intensifying in Germany.
The UN refugee agency is concerned that “the tone in the debate about escape and migration in Germany is becoming increasingly tense.” Volunteering is counteracted by “misinformation, hate speech and populism”.
“We have to get back to having fact-based discussions,” demanded Peter Ruhenstroth-Bauer, National Director of the UN Refugee Agency, in a statement. But when even representatives of democratic parties adopt a populist tone, they move further and further away from the facts and reality.
The number of displaced people has increased worldwide due to violence, conflict and climate change. The war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza are the focus of media attention. Other conflicts, for example the one in Sudan, have disappeared from the public eye. The situation in Syria, Yemen and the Democratic Republic of Congo are also forgotten crises. According to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of refugees worldwide has doubled in the past seven years.
