Only on Friday did Russia carry out an unprecedented attack on Ukraine. Now a major attack on the Russian border region is being reported. Two children are killed. Kyiv is keeping a low profile.
Authorities in the Russian border region of Belgorod have reported a major Ukrainian attack with at least two dead.
The Ukrainian army shelled the center of the regional capital of the same name, Belgorod, said Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on Telegram in the afternoon. Two children were killed and other people were injured. This information could not initially be independently verified. There is currently no official reaction from Kiev.
People are supposed to hide in shelters
In the meantime, Governor Gladkov called on people in Belgorod to hide in shelters. At the same time, there were complaints from residents that several air raid shelters were apparently cordoned off and therefore inaccessible. Videos also circulated on social networks showing numerous columns of smoke and burning cars. In some recordings, the sounds of explosions and people screaming could also be heard.
Belgorod borders Ukraine and has been repeatedly shelled since the war began almost two years ago. However, the damage and number of victims are disproportionate to those in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. It was only on the night of last Friday that Russia launched its heaviest attack to date on the neighboring country. According to official Ukrainian information, at least 39 people were killed.
