The war in Ukraine has lasted almost two years, and the war in Gaza has lasted almost three months. In both cases there is still no end in sight. In Germany there is little hope that this will change soon.
A clear majority of Germans do not expect the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to end in 2024. According to a survey by the Yougov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency, 70 percent of respondents believe it is unlikely that the weapons will fall silent before the end of the year in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing for almost two years. Only 15 percent rate such a scenario as likely. Tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed on both sides since the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians also died.
The hope for an end to the Gaza war is somewhat greater, but here too a majority of 52 percent do not expect it. Only 32 percent think an end to the war in 2024 is likely, 16 percent do not provide any information.
Israeli forces have been fighting the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 21,800 people have been killed in the Israeli military operation. The figures cannot be confirmed, but the UN and other observers point out that they have so far proven to be credible overall.
The war was triggered by the worst terrorist attack on Israel in its history, for which Hamas and other extremist groups are responsible. On the Israeli side, around 1,200 people were killed, including at least 850 civilians.
Ukraine war is seen as the biggest threat
When asked which conflict people in Germany perceive as the biggest threat, the survey gives a clear answer: 40 percent of those surveyed classify the war in Ukraine as the biggest threat, 18 percent classify the war in Gaza and 15 percent see the conflict between China and Taiwan is the most threatening. Another 6 percent say that other than these three conflicts are even more threatening to them. 21 percent provide no information on this.
For what the polling institute said was a representative survey, Yougov surveyed 2,092 adults online between December 15th and 19th.
