Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) called the extent of the flood disaster in Germany “surreal, ghostly”. After a visit to the Eifel village of Schuld, Merkel said on Sunday in Adenau, Rhineland-Palatinate, that the German language hardly knows any words for this devastation. “We will oppose this force of nature,” said the Chancellor and announced federal aid for the affected communities.

“We stand by your side,” said Merkel, addressing the victims of the flood disaster. On Wednesday, the cabinet in Berlin will adopt a program for quick aid, she announced. Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) has already named the sum of 300 million euros for this. The federal government and the state would act together “to bring the world in order step by step in this beautiful area,” said Merkel.

Angela Merkel: I’ll be back at the end of August

The Chancellor assured that in addition to providing quick aid, the federal government would also provide long-term support. She will come back at the end of August – “so that we can make it clear that we have a long breath”.

Accompanied by the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD), the Chancellor visited the badly damaged debt. The village lies in a loop of the Ahr. According to the latest information, 112 people were killed in the region.

A total of 159 people were killed in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Upper Bavaria, which has also been affected by the flood since Saturday evening. Numerous other people are still missing.
