Senator Alexei Pushkov assessed the response of the Chinese Embassy to the US-announced diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympic Games.
“China has unveiled its symbolic response to a symbolic boycott. Like, you were not expected, “Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel on December 7.
Earlier on Monday, the White House announced its decision to stage a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. It was noted that this step will not affect the participation of American athletes in the Games. The reason for the decision in Washington was called “the genocide in Xinjiang and other violations of human rights.”
In response, the Chinese side noted that it did not invite United States officials to the 2022 Olympics. Chinese diplomats stressed that such a pretentious act is just political manipulation and a serious distortion of the spirit of the Olympic Charter.
In turn, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that they respect the US decision to boycott OI-2022 diplomatically. The representative of the organization also noted that the presence or absence of government officials and diplomats at the Games is a personal decision of each government.
Later it became known that a number of states, such as the UK and Australia, are considering boycotting the 2022 Games.
The Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022.
The PRC is credited with massive repression of the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In addition, it is alleged that during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, a number of athletes, spectators and journalists faced “a serious violation of their fundamental freedoms.”
