A large group of “Reich citizens” is said to have planned a violent overthrow in Germany. The first suspects have already been charged. But new details keep emerging.
According to files from the Federal Court of Justice (BGH), the alleged “Reichsbürger” group, which is said to have planned a coup, wanted to obtain military equipment through a former officer in the GDR’s National People’s Army (NVA). A suspected member of the group around Henry XIII. Prince Reuss had contact with the man via chat, according to a decision by the BGH in Karlsruhe on continued pre-trial detention.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office had the suspect arrested in the Freudenstadt district of Baden-Württemberg in May 2023. He is said to have joined the association by July 2022 at the latest and participated in its military part. According to statements from a co-accused, the man led an area within a so-called homeland security company and, in this capacity, took part in several meetings of the group’s military arm, according to the decision. The two also drew up equipment lists and inspected a barracks area as the unit’s base.
In October 2022, the accused showed interest in purchasing various items of clothing and equipment from the Bundeswehr and NVA in a chat with the former NVA officer. Jointly drafted lists of military material were confiscated from the co-accused. According to the BGH documents, there were, among other things, several thousand items of clothing, more than 300,000 rounds of ammunition, armored vehicles (the types Dingo, Wiesel and GTK Boxer are mentioned), military heavy transport vehicles (“Mammoth with loading crane”) and armored reconnaissance vehicles (Fennek). “Reich citizens” are people who do not recognize the Federal Republic and its democratic structures. The large-scale anti-terror raid against the group around Henry XIII. Prince Reuss in December 2022 caused a stir. A few weeks ago, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had indicted 27 suspects before the higher regional courts in Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Stuttgart. There are dozens of other suspects.
