Two explosions by suicide bombers killed dozens of people. Now several people who supported the attackers have been arrested.
Iran’s secret service says it has arrested nine people after the devastating terrorist attack in the city of Kerman. The arrests in connection with Wednesday’s double suicide attack took place in six provinces, the state news agency Irna reported, citing a statement from the secret service. The people were part of a network of supporters of the attackers.
During a raid on the two suicide bombers’ accommodation in Kerman, additional explosive belts were found, the secret service statement continued. One of the two attackers had Tajik citizenship. Information from the Iranian secret service cannot be independently verified.
In the attack on Wednesday, two attackers killed 89 people and injured around 280 others. The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. It was for a memorial event to mark the anniversary of the death of Iranian General Ghassem Soleimani in his hometown. It was the deadliest attack in the 45-year history of the Islamic Republic. The Sunni IS sees the Shiite majority population in Iran as apostates from Islam and despises them.
