Terrorism: Five police officers killed during vaccination campaign in Pakistan

In Pakistan there are repeated attacks on helpers and security forces during vaccination campaigns against polio. Five police officers have now been killed in an attack.

At least five police officers were killed by a bomb during a polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan. More than twenty other people, mainly security forces, were injured, a police spokesman told the German Press Agency on Monday. In Pakistan there are repeated attacks, sometimes fatal, on vaccination workers and the security forces who protect them. Polio vaccinations are seen by some Islamist militants as a Western tool to sterilize Muslims.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement. Accordingly, the attack was not aimed at the vaccination workers, but only at the police officers.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the few countries where new infections with the pathogen are still occurring. Pakistan is also struggling with a strengthening of the Pakistani Taliban, who are carrying out attacks particularly in the border region with Afghanistan. According to the police spokesman, the attack on Monday took place in the northwest of the country near the Afghan border. The bomb exploded near a vehicle on the side of the road.
