On Friday, Berlin’s governing mayor made his relationship with his education senator public. Private and professional matters are strictly separated, it was said. The SPD is calling for concrete proposals.
In view of the love affair between Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and his education senator, the coalition partner SPD is now demanding clear rules from him to avoid conflicts of interest. “Now it’s about creating legal clarity and defining concrete procedures for the strict separation of private and professional interests – especially in the event of a conflict,” said SPD state chairwoman and deputy head of government Franziska Giffey on Monday evening. “It is the task of the governing mayor to submit a proposal for this in the Senate.”
With the announcement of his relationship with Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) last week, Wegner initially created transparency. “That was an important first step,” said Senator for Economic Affairs Giffey.
Wegner and Günther-Wünsch made their relationship public on Friday. As lawyer Christian Schertz announced, they both decided to enter into a relationship in the fall of 2023. “Regardless of the fact that such a constellation does not contradict any legal provisions, it is of course self-evident that those involved strictly separate private and professional matters in connection with their official duties,” explained Schertz.
