In view of the changed security situation, Foreign Minister Baerbock is open to supplying Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia. However, your party is divided.
The Green Party leader Omid Nouripour has not spoken out in principle against the delivery of Eurofighter fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, but he has not clearly been in favor of it either. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who belongs to his party, had considered not opposing a British delivery of the joint product.
As party leader, he is committed to his party’s negative decisions, Nouripour said on Deutschlandfunk on Tuesday. At the same time, the security situation in the Middle East has changed since the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on Israel. “We see that there is a fundamental dynamic, and at the same time we see that it is necessary to deal very, very carefully and restrictively with arms exports.” Many things are not yet on the table at the moment.
Baerbock said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia was contributing to Israel’s security by intercepting rockets fired at Israel by the Yemeni Houthis. One does not see that the federal government is opposing the British considerations. Chancellor Olaf Scholz encouraged them. The Eurofighters are a European joint project in which Germany is involved and therefore has veto rights over their export.
Lang describes possible delivery as wrong
Green Party co-leader Ricarda Lang described a possible delivery to Saudi Arabia as wrong, citing the country’s human rights situation. Nouripour now said that initially it was only a matter of a bidding process in which London could take part. This procedure can be opened. “This is not a delivery promise.”
Nouripour did not want to see a disagreement between Baerbock and Lang. “I’m with both and I don’t see that the two are separated in the direction of travel.”
Lang himself also emphasized in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin” that no decision was pending. Great Britain can decide for itself whether to take part in the bidding process. Since the Hamas terrorist attack, “Saudi Arabia’s role has changed a lot, especially in supporting Israel,” she said. But: “We have a fundamental position as a party that we find the delivery of Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia wrong.”
