The results of the talks between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, give hope for an easing of tensions between the two countries. This was announced on December 8 by the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky.
“And although the details of this fateful conversation are unlikely to ever be fully known to the general public, the laconic messages of both sides give reason to hope that the degree of anti-Russian hysteria in the Western political and media space will decrease,” the deputy wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to him, at the Russia-US summit, which took place on Tuesday, December 7, in the mode of videoconference, “the most important issues were discussed, including the problems of strategic stability and cyber security.”
Slutsky added that the presidents also discussed the topic of Ukraine, “around which a real pre-war hysteria has been whipped up by Washington lately.”
The head of the State Duma committee also drew attention to the fact that during the negotiations it became known that amendments by congressmen, which imply the introduction of sanctions against Nord Stream 2, were excluded from the draft defense budget of the country agreed upon by the two chambers of the US Congress.
“In general, the results of the summit, as they say, give grounds for cautious optimism, although, of course, no one expects miracles,” Slutsky summed up.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Joe Biden on the evening of Tuesday, December 7, held talks behind closed doors via a secure video link. The talks between the heads of state lasted for two hours.
Later, the Kremlin said that the Russia-US summit was frank and businesslike. It was clarified that the leaders discussed the implementation of the results of the Russian-American summit held in Geneva in June, and also agreed to continue the dialogue between the countries.
In addition, Joe Biden emphasized the allegedly threatening nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders and outlined sanctions measures that the United States and its allies would be ready to apply in the event of a further escalation of the situation.
In turn, Vladimir Putin stressed that there is no need to shift the responsibility onto the shoulders of Russia, since it is NATO that is making dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory and is building up its military potential at our borders.
Bloomberg reported that after a meeting with Putin, the leaders of the UK and several European countries will discuss with Biden the results of the summit talks. On the same day, it became known that Biden intends to hold talks with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky after a conversation with Putin.
