82 votes for equality: Chile’s Chamber of Deputies paves the way for homosexual couples to get married.
After years of wrangling, Chile has allowed marriages of the same sex. The Chamber of Deputies approved the law on Tuesday.
82 MPs voted for same-sex marriage, 20 against and two abstained. The Movement for Integration and Homosexual Liberation (Movilh) called for a victory celebration in the center of the capital Santiago de Chile.
Presidential candidate against law
So far, homosexuals in Chile have only been able to enter into a registered civil partnership. In Latin America, same-sex marriages are already possible in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Uruguay and parts of Mexico.
The far-right presidential candidate José Antonio Kast is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage. The son of German immigrants and father of nine children will run against former left student leader Gabriel Boric in the runoff election on December 19.
