It is “now obvious that Brexit is not working,” says London’s mayor. Great Britain must stop the decline – and urgently build a closer relationship with the EU, he demands.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan is calling for Great Britain to get closer to the European Union. This emerges from parts of a speech that the Labor politician plans to give in the City of London in the evening. Among other things, Khan referred to a study according to which the estimated gross value added in Great Britain in 2023 would have been 140 billion pounds (around 162 billion euros) higher without Brexit.
The country urgently needs to build a closer relationship with the EU to stop the decline, said Khan, who wants to run for re-election this year. It is “now obvious that Brexit is not working”. The hard Brexit that the country has taken is dragging down the economy and driving up the cost of living, Khan said, according to the statement.
If you believe a recently published survey by the opinion research institute Opinium on behalf of the Sunday newspaper “Observer”, Khan speaks from the hearts of the British. Accordingly, a clear majority of eligible voters in the United Kingdom believe that Brexit has caused more harm than good. For example, almost two thirds of the more than 2,000 people surveyed in mid-December were convinced that Brexit had driven up prices.
