Ukraine war: Medvedev threatens to use nuclear weapons again

Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev is raising the stakes after rocket attacks on Ukraine and is toying with the possibility of a nuclear scenario.

After the recent serious rocket strikes against Ukraine, Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev once again caused a stir with threats of nuclear weapons.

“As is known, different carriers with different charges were used (in the attacks), with the exception of nuclear ones. Yet!” Medvedev said at a meeting of the Russian Military and Armaments Commission. Medvedev described the recent attacks, in which more than 30 civilians died in Kiev, for example, as “resultant strikes against military objects.”

The deputy head of the Russian National Security Council followed up on Telegram: He warned Kiev against attempts to use long-range Western missiles to bombard missile launch pads on Russian territory. This was “not self-defense, but a direct and obvious justification for the use of nuclear weapons against such a country,” Medvedev wrote.

Earlier, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat said Ukraine did not have the resources to intercept the thousands of S-300 missiles in Russia’s arsenal. It would be more effective to disable the launchers of these missiles with precision weapons. Russia regularly bombards Ukraine with S-300s.

Medvedev, the hardliner and agitator

Since the outbreak of the Russian war of aggression, Medvedev has been considered a hardliner and agitator. He has threatened to use nuclear weapons several times. However, there is no concrete indication that Russia could actually be planning to do this at the moment.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of the neighboring country more than 22 months ago. Despite several setbacks, Russia still occupies around a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed in 2014, and is currently on the path to victory.

Experts also believe that Russia has recently regained the initiative on the battlefield. This is also due to the fact that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine are stalling. According to estimates, Russia currently fires around five times as much artillery ammunition as Ukraine. Moscow also has a large preponderance when it comes to the number of missiles and drones.
