The Kremlin outlined further steps to develop the dialogue between Putin and Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Joe Biden agreed to appoint their representatives who will promptly begin discussing strategic security issues. This was announced on December 8 by the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov.

“The presidents agreed that they will appoint their representatives who will promptly start discussing this complex confrontational situation, discussing issues of strategic security on the continent. [Ответить] when it will be exactly, it is not yet possible, ”he told reporters.

According to Peskov, the presidents said that after the contacts between their representatives took place, it was necessary to talk again. At the same time, the format of future negotiations was not indicated.

“The format is not important. This format (videoconference – Ed.) Allows you to talk quite frankly, Putin liked this format, ”the press secretary said.

Answering the question whether Biden spoke about Putin about his intention to influence Germany in order to stop the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) project, Peskov stressed that this topic was not mentioned during the dialogue.

The night before, Putin and Biden held talks behind closed doors via a secure video link. The talks between the heads of state lasted for two hours.

The Kremlin said that the Russia-US summit was frank and businesslike. The leaders discussed the implementation of the results of the Russian-American summit held in Geneva in June, and also agreed to continue the dialogue between the countries.

Biden drew attention to the allegedly threatening nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders and outlined sanctions measures that the United States and its allies would be ready to apply in the event of further deterioration of the situation. He also called for a de-escalation of the situation. At the same time, at a briefing following the talks, the US Presidential Adviser for National Security Jake Sullivan said that Ukraine had “constructive ideas” on diplomacy with the Russian Federation.

In turn, Putin stressed that there is no need to shift the responsibility onto the shoulders of the Russian Federation, since it is NATO that is making dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory and is building up its military potential at the Russian borders.

As Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the Higher School of Economics, explained to Izvestia, the current conversation between the two leaders was extremely important, since recently there has been a significant escalation of tension.

The head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky said that the results of the talks between the two presidents give hope for an easing of tensions between the two countries. According to him, at the Russia-US summit “the most important issues were discussed, including the problems of strategic stability and cyber security.”
