There has been war in the Gaza Strip for 100 days – and more than 100 hostages are still being held. US President Joe Biden wants to bring American hostages back to their families.
On the 100th day of the Gaza War, US President Joe Biden recalled the fate of the hostages still held captive in the Gaza Strip. “For 100 days they have lived in fear for their lives, not knowing what the next day will bring,” Biden wrote in a statement. He will never forget the heartache and suffering he experienced in his meetings with the families of American hostages.
The US government assumes that there are six US citizens among the more than 100 hostages. The President renewed his pledge to remain in close contact with partners in Qatar, Egypt and Israel to return all hostages to their families.
On October 7, 2023, terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups carried out a massacre in southern Israel. They killed 1,200 people and kidnapped around 240 others to the Gaza Strip. Since then, Israel has been trying to destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure with air strikes and a ground offensive. During a ceasefire, 105 hostages were released in return for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
Israel estimates that more than 130 hostages are still being held in the Gaza Strip, but 25 of them are no longer alive. In Tel Aviv at the weekend, numerous relatives of those abducted took part in a marathon rally calling for more decisive efforts to ensure their release.
