While all the other ministers had their cars driven to the Federal President’s appointment, the new Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, came to Bellevue Palace by bike.
The distance between the Reichstag and Bellevue Palace is a good 1.6 kilometers long, and was driven again and again on Wednesday: After his election as Chancellor in the Bundestag, Olaf Scholz went over to the seat of the Federal President for the official appointment, then back to the swearing-in and with his ministerial team back in the castle. This was followed by the swearing-in of the new ministers in the Reichstag.
Scholz and most of his cabinet members used the driving service and let themselves be driven back and forth in the car. Cem Özdemir is different: The new Minister of Agriculture covered the route from the Reichstag through the Tiergarten to Bellevue Palace on an e-bike and was not prevented from doing so by the cold temperatures. The bike ride takes around seven minutes.
Cem Özdemir takes over the Ministry of Agriculture
To protect against wind and weather, Özdemir had put on a blue outdoor jacket over his suit. However, for safety reasons, he was not allowed to park his bike directly in front of Bellevue Palace. After the appointment as minister by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Özdemir casually said goodbye to an employee and cycled away again. He stowed the certificate of appointment on the porter. In the social networks, Özdemir gained additional sympathy points from many users.
The 55-year-old Swabian only slipped into Olaf Scholz’s cabinet at the last moment. For a long time it had looked as if the previous group leader Anton Hofreiter, a representative of the left wing within the party, would get a ministerial post. Ultimately, however, the Realo Özdemir had been preferred. The personnel had led to some disagreements within the party in the run-up to the election of Chancellor. Özdemir was previously chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure and was therefore initially also under discussion as Transport Minister.
