The new government of Germany is in place. With consensus building that lasted over two months, this government formation was significantly faster than the previous one.
For the first time there is an alliance of the SPD, FDP and the Greens at the federal level. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas took the oath of office from the ministers of the new federal government on Wednesday, December 8th, 2021 in the plenary hall of the Bundestag. As the graphic based on data from the German Bundestag shows, voters had to wait 73 days from election day until the traffic light cabinet was in office.
Not a bad record – at least the two previous grand coalitions took longer. The formation of the outgoing government took a particularly long time, 172 days. In 2017 the FDP broke off the Jamaica negotiations after a month. After the four weeks there was a negotiating paper “with countless contradictions, open questions and conflicting goals,” said FDP leader Christian Lindner at the time. The fourth cabinet under Chancellor Angela Merkel therefore needed 172 days to be sworn in. That is exactly 5 months, two weeks and 5 days.
The SPD and the Greens were the fastest
In the past 30 years an alliance between the SPD and the Greens was the fastest (30 days), only slightly outbid by the CDU and FDP (31 days). The formation of the current traffic light coalition has been described by many media as being constructive and solution-oriented, among other things. Alliances of three or even four parties last existed in Konrad Adenauer’s cabinets in the 1950s.
