Journalists in Afghanistan are subjected to severe repression by the Islamist Taliban. There has now been another incident in which media professionals were threatened.
The Taliban ruling Afghanistan have forcibly evacuated a radio station in the eastern Afghan province of Khost. As the Afghan Journalists Center (AFJC) organization said, citing local sources, Taliban government security forces are said to have forcibly removed the equipment and threatened employees after breaking into the office.
Four employees were temporarily arrested and the head of the radio has been in Taliban custody for a week. The radio has since stopped its activity.
According to the AFJC, the provincial police spokesman justified the violent crackdown with non-payment of the monthly rent. According to human rights organizations, journalists in Afghanistan are subjected to severe repression under the Islamist Taliban.
Intimidation and arbitrary arrests occur again and again. Last year, a women’s radio station in the north of the country had to temporarily close because the station was said to have played music during Lent.
