Despite the increasing threat of AI-controlled disinformation in elections, the EU Commissioner believes that the tech industry is not yet sufficiently prepared.
According to the EU Commission, this year’s elections in the EU must be particularly protected against influence using artificial intelligence.
Disinformation could undermine trust not only in individual parties, but also in the democratic process as a whole, warned EU Commissioner Vera Jourova on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. “The tech industry should respond to this,” she said.
“It is important that people have the chance to vote in free and fair elections,” emphasized Jourova. In the case of disinformation, a quick reaction from social networks is necessary. “There should be a massive fact-checking,” she said.
The tech industry is not yet sufficiently prepared. However, large companies have already announced that they will strengthen their systems and, for example, hire more fact checkers. Jourova also called on companies to label deepfakes and AI products now – even before they are legally obliged to do so. Voters must be able to recognize what is not a human-made product.
