In the Aegean and Ionian Seas, no more ferries should leave from Friday. Seafarers have announced a 48-hour strike. An expansion is not ruled out.
Travelers in Greece must expect significant problems in ferry traffic from Friday. The seafarers employed in the coastal shipping sector have announced a 48-hour strike that is due to start at 12 a.m. local time (Thursday, 11 p.m. CET).
The strike could even be extended indefinitely, a spokesman for the Seafarers’ Union (PNO) said on Greek radio on Thursday. The negotiations between the seafarers’ union and the shipowners had failed.
Ferries are as important in Greece as the railways in other countries
According to the information, no ferry should leave the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The employees are demanding, among other things, a new collective wage agreement with substantial wage increases.
Because of the numerous islands, ferry traffic in Greece is as important as the railways in other countries. Many islands do not have an airport and are dependent on ferries – both for tourism and for their supply of food, fuel and medicine.
