The leader of the Alliance party Sahra Wagenknecht doubts the effectiveness of mass demonstrations against right-wing extremism. She points to the traffic light policy as the main cause of the AfD’s success.
Bundestag member Sahra Wagenknecht does not expect the mass demonstrations against the right to weaken the AfD. “The AfD is not so strong because there are suddenly so many voters with right-wing radical views,” said the leader of the Alliance party Sahra Wagenknecht to the German Press Agency in Berlin. “The AfD is so strong because politics in Berlin is so catastrophic.”
According to police figures, more than 900,000 people took part in demonstrations against right-wing extremism and for the protection of democracy last weekend alone. The protests were triggered by revelations from the Correctiv research center about a meeting of right-wing extremists on November 25th in Potsdam, at which AfD politicians as well as members of the CDU and the very conservative Values Union were also present. According to participants, plans were discussed as to how a large number of people of foreign origin should leave the country – even under duress.
Wagenknecht said: “The demonstrations show that many people are worried when a party that has right-wing extremists and Nazis in its ranks becomes increasingly stronger.” But the protests should not overshadow who is responsible for the AfD’s successes: “And the federal government is responsible, which rightly outrages people with its incompetence, aloofness and patronage politics,” said Wagenknecht. “If traffic light politicians are now at the forefront of the demonstrations, it is pure hypocrisy and hypocrisy, because essentially they are demonstrating against themselves, against the fruits of their politics.”
