Human rights: Another protester executed in Iran

With the execution of Mohammed Ghobadlu, Iran is sending another sign of toughness against the protest movement. The 23-year-old is said to have been responsible for the death of a police officer.

Another protester has been executed in Iran. This was reported by the justice portal Misan, which is considered the mouthpiece of the Iranian judiciary.

The judiciary holds Mohammed Ghobadlu responsible for the killing of a police officer during the nationwide protests in autumn 2022. According to human rights organizations, Ghobadlu was 23 years old.

According to research by the New York Times, Ghobadlu was a hairdresser. He was arrested in Tehran shortly after protests broke out in late September 2022. He is accused of running over a police officer. Ghobadlu had appealed against his death sentence.

So far nine people who took part in protests have been executed

The death of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini sparked mass protests in Iran more than a year ago. For months, young people in particular took to the streets to demonstrate against the Islamic system of rule. The Islamic Republic has now executed nine people who took part in the protests.

Amnesty International described the trials against them as unfair “sham trials.” Critics accuse the political leadership in Tehran of using the executions to spread fear and intimidate the protest movement. Prominent lawyers in Iran also criticized the proceedings.
