It’s a sad high. According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), 293 media workers are currently behind bars for their work – around a quarter of them in China and Myanmar.
“This is the sixth year in a row that the CPJ has documented a high number of journalists in jail worldwide,” said Joel Simon, head of the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ). He described the imprisonment of media workers because of their reporting as “a hallmark of an authoritarian regime”.
As the CPJ announced on Thursday, 293 media workers are currently imprisoned for their work. Last year the organization counted 280 journalists arrested.
According to the CPJ, 50 journalists are currently in custody in China. Myanmar follows in second place with 26 imprisoned media representatives, in Egypt there are 25. Vietnam (23 imprisoned journalists) and Belarus (19) are also high on the CPJ’s list.
24 media workers were killed in 2021
“It is shocking to see so many countries on the list year after year, but it is particularly appalling that Myanmar and Ethiopia have slammed the doors to freedom of the press so brutally,” said Simon.
According to the CPJ, 24 media workers were also killed in 2021. Mexico continues to be the most dangerous country “in the western hemisphere for journalists,” according to the CPJ study. Accordingly, three journalists were killed there, and six other alleged homicides are still being investigated.
According to the CPJ, the numbers reflect “increasing intolerance of independent reporting around the world”.
