Ukraine is to receive six Sea King Mk41 helicopters from the Bundeswehr for its defense against the Russian army. The Federal Ministry of Defense announced this on Tuesday after consultations with other supporting countries of the invaded country. It is the first delivery of military helicopters from Germany to Ukraine.
The machines come from the Federal Navy’s inventory. According to the Bundeswehr, it still has a total of 21 examples of the type after a crash in 1998. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called the Sea King Mk41 a “proven and robust” helicopter. He will help Ukraine in many areas.
Sea King Mk41 can land on water
The machines are likely to be used in the war primarily for reconnaissance, for example over the Black Sea, and logistics. Although they can be armed with a heavy machine gun and a decoy launcher for self-protection, they are not considered attack helicopters, but are classified as multi-purpose helicopters.
The Sea King Mk41 is considered a workhorse among helicopters and, according to the Bundeswehr, has been in use for the Navy since the mid-1970s, primarily as part of civil-military cooperation as part of the German search and rescue service for the North and East Baltic Sea. For this purpose, it has, among other things, radar devices, a thermal imaging camera and a rescue winch on board – and has an enormous range of up to 1,500 kilometers. The top speed is 252 kilometers per hour. A special feature: the helicopters can even land on the surface of the water when the sea is calm.

In addition to search and rescue services, the helicopter type is also used by the Federal Navy to transport soldiers and material. A maximum of 20 passengers can accommodate a crew of three or four in the 22-meter-long helicopter; the maximum take-off weight is 9.3 tons.
Despite all its advantages: the Sea King Mk41, developed in the United States, is a discontinued model for the Bundeswehr. It is simply getting old and maintenance is becoming more and more difficult. In the coming years, modern NH-90 NTH Sea Lion helicopters will take over its tasks in the German Navy.
