For more than a week, the scandal surrounding an alleged party of employees of the British Prime Minister in the middle of lockdown has been simmering. There are now reports of more illegal parties.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson came under further pressure on Thursday in the affair surrounding alleged lockdown parties at the seat of government.
Even conservative newspapers did not skimp on their front pages with criticism. “One rule for them and new rules for the rest of us,” headlined the Daily Mail, alluding to stricter corona measures that the conservative head of government had announced the previous evening. A comment was touched on the front page of the Telegraph with the question: “The beginning of the end for Boris?”. Party colleagues accused him of the measures being a diversionary maneuver.
Johnson apologized in parliament on Wednesday. Not for an alleged party of his employees while the rest of the country was in lockdown, but for a video in which his former press secretary joked with colleagues about how such a party could be publicly justified. Johnson further denied that there had been a breach of the rules, but opened an internal investigation.
Meanwhile, newspapers reported about further parties that were illegal under the Corona rules at the time in government buildings and even in the prime minister’s office at the end of last year. The scandal, which has been smoldering for over a week, is now referred to by the press as the “party gate”.
